Did the California Zephyr 2 summers ago - awesome!

We rode from Chicago to San Francisco. We had one of the "family bedrooms" which was just the right size - family of four with 2 kids, ages 8 and 7. That room was nice b/c it spanned the full width of the car so we had windows on both sides, although it was on the lower level so in some places that restricted the view.

We had 3 days, 2 nights on the train which was just right. Room was comfortable enough, but it is still a moving train that makes overnight stops, so sleep was meh. Food was better than I expected. Not 4 star, but pretty good. All meals are included in the sleeper car ticket (except alcohol), and you get dibs on dinner reservations. If you have < 4 people in your group you may share a table with another party.

Views were amazing! And they had guides on-board for part giving commentary on what you were passing.

I'd recommend springing for one of the bedrooms vs. a roomette even if only 2 people, as all the rooms are really small and that extra space to stretch is nice, plus you'd have your own bathroom.

Would definitely not recommend going with a regular coach ticket for an overnight. The folks on our train that were in coach did not look very happy/comfortable. And the bathrooms in the coach car were pretty rough by the end of the trip. They only let you into the sleeper cars if you have a ticket in them, so they stayed pretty clean.
