FWIW the NCAA didn't sponsor its first Men's Basketball Tournament

until 1939 even though it was formed on March 31, 1906 as the Intercollegiate Athletic Association of the United States (IAAUS). The IAAUS eventually was rebranded as the NCAA in 1910. It doesn't appear that the IAAUS sponsored a men's basketball tournament. If VT is going to claim a national championship in men's basketball for the 1909-1910 season, then it will need to find at least 1 organization (i.e. NCAA, AP, UPI, Coaches Poll, etc.) to recognize VT as its "national champion" in order to justify having stuff made to promote the accomplishment.

At least UCF can get away with it because NCAA doesn't award a national title in DI-FBS football. The NCAA's DI football champion is the DI-FCS champion. So any DI-FBS title is based on someone's final poll and/or a private organization's playoff.
