Early on it was the system.....

and by that I mean that the system is well suited to a long haul regular season that rewards consistency but, in the one and done environment of the NCAA tourney it is challenged to stand up for six straight games against good talent. There is always going to be that one night where the opponent is on and they have to score to win. Someone will say, if that is so why have they been successful in the ACC tourney, and my response is because in reality that tourney is not one and done because the NCAA tourney is always up next, it is not a win or go home for good proposition. This leads to the second point which attributed it to the system "early on", however, now and with each ensuing year and failure to get over the hump/get the monkey of their back(choose whatever cliché you like) the burden/pressure exponentially multiplies. After losing to a #16(Hoos can argue UMBC was not really a 16 all they like but, that is what the seed # will forever show) that pressure is even larger because at least until it happens again, and probably even after it does, the UMBC Retrievers will be a staple of the NCAA Cinderella storyline, it is sort of like the Denver Broncos, even after their Super Bowl victories, being the poster child for Super Bowl blowouts.
