I think the bridge sport aspect is changing
Sure for older (not quite pre-beamer though) fans who tend to be message board jockeys and pretend they don't care for basketball, but the overall fan base is certainly beginning to care more about bball.
I know I personally look forward to basketball season more than football these days, because at least there's a chance we win a big game (and quite often do). VT football just isn't fun if you aren't tailgating in blacksburg knowing any meaningful game will be a loss. Since I became a fan in 08, we've never won a big game, and I would say we've only really won one in 95.
Meanwhile in basketball I get to talk smack to my UNC and UVA classmates in a sport that actually stings them. Plus the NCAAT tournament is second only to the world cup in best sporting events in the world, VT being in it is really exciting, more so than a Belk bowl invite.
