So greater access = more fair?

-- and equal accessibility is guaranteed via conference championships. So basically non-conference games don't matter AT ALL. They are utterly irrelevant to a team's worthiness for access to the CFP?

VT won the ACC in 2008 with an 8-4 record. THAT team deserved to be in the CFP (if there had been one in 2008)?!

A pure auto-bid system would remove subjectivity but it would also reduce the likelihood of getting the best teams in the playoff or the most deserving teams (I use the term "deserving" to mean the teams with the best resumes/body of work for the whole season).

Your suggestion would suggest we treat all non-conference games as mere exhibitions/pre-season games.

Theoretically, a team could go 0-4 in their non-conference schedule and 5-3 in their conference schedule and win their division (again, VT won the ACC Coastal with a 5-3 record a few years ago). If they then win their conference championship game, they would be 6-7 and going to the CFP.

That's utter insanity. Your suggestion would completely destroy the one thing that makes college football unique -- the value of the regular season. Every single game matters. The tension created by the high stakes is fantastic.

But hey, don't worry about those non-con games. Don't worry about losing a couple of conference games (if you're in a weak conference) -- as long as you can make it to your conference CG, you can be downright mediocre and have a shot at the national title.

No thanks. Let's make every game count. Let's reward teams who schedule tough non-con games and WIN THEM. Let's let the total body of work for the whole season determine who's EARNED a spot in the playoff by being one of the best teams in the country and proving that with their play and resume.

Is it a bit subjective? Of course. But I'll take a bit of subjectivity from a committee of experts rather than a set of arbitrary constraints in the name of inclusivity and egalitarianism.

Is anyone really shedding tears for a P5 conference that has a team left out? Was the PAC10 or PAC12 or whatever it's called really deserving of a spot in the CFP? Win. Games. If a Pac10 team had gone 13-0 or 12-1, they would've been in.
