One way to look at it is that at least teams are incentivized to win the games. If the non-conference games play NO part in determining who makes it to the CFP, then they are merely exhibitions. So making them count (regardless of who programs choose to schedule) is better than those games becoming scrimmages.

The other way to look at it is that teams will look to schedule quality opponents in order to bolster their resumes. Baylor had a couple of great seasons but played terrible teams in the non-con schedule and it kept them from ascending into a top 4 spot.

Lots of teams are willing to do this under the current system. Alabama, Oklahoma, Ohio State, Clemson, etc.

Either way, at least teams give a crap about winning their games rather than treating them as pre-season/exhibition games.
