Lacrosse - Some perspective
The quick turnaround of the lacrosse program is amazing. Consider this: in the 12 years prior to the arrival of John Sung, we were 3-69 in ACC play. Two of those wins were against a BC program that was almost as bad as us from 2006-2012. In that 7 year period BC was 6-2 against us but only had two other conference wins. Last year (Sung's first) we were 2-6 and this year we are 4-2.
Coaching can bring you far in most sports but it usually can't bring you to the top. To take the next step we need to recruit at a higher level. To give you a feel for our past recruiting, I can offer this: US Lacrosse lists an All-American team for each year. It is not a true All-American team since hundreds of players are given the honor and the number selected from each state is a function of the number of players in that state but it is a decent proxy for talent level. From 2014-2016, the All-Americans committing to select schools is as follows:
Syracuse - 16
UNC -15
ND -14
UVa -12
BC - 12
Duke - 11
VT - 3
I can't find a summary of the 2017 Class but we did pick up 4 A-A players. There are 4 freshmen making an impact this year and 3 of them were A-A honorees. That is a solid recruiting start for Sung. Often you need to have success before you can attract the top recruits. It will be interesting to see how our talent level improves in the coming years.
