Assuming the Big XII has either faded into history or on its last leg

The Big Ten and SEC look to carve up the ACC right around the time the GoR is set to expire. From a content standpoint, I do think the combination of UVA-Duke-UNC could hold enough value for the Big Ten to at least mull over expanding in that part of the country. Now whether the Big Ten pulls the trigger or not may be up for debate.

As other sports increase in popularity at the lower levels, I do think some expansions may be driven by that at some level. You could probably make the claim that the ACC didn't add Syracuse because of the value it adds to football, but instead for the value the school adds in other sports (i.e. basketball, lacrosse, etc).

Once there are only 2 or 3 power conferences left and they are the size of the ECAC, then I could see those conferences decide to break up into smaller more regional conferences. If the conferences and schools decide to pool their resources together in terms of media rights, then it will make things easier to break up these mega conferences. It is as if the goal of the mega conference is to help the schools trim the fat. Once the fat is all gone, then there is no incentive to continue with these mega conferences.
