Here's the story from the Roanoke Times:

Votaw, Akoro leaving Tech women’s team

Virginia Tech women’s basketball coach Kenny Brooks said freshmen Sierra Votaw and Celeste Akoro will be transferring from Tech.

Votaw and Akoro were both redshirted this year — Votaw for developmental reasons and Akoro for injury reasons. Akoro, who suffered a torn ACL in high school, spent this year rehabbing her knee.

Votaw, a forward, said she plans to transfer to Eastern Florida State (Junior) College. She said the Tech coaches recommended that school to her.

“I would just like probably more playing time at a different level,” Votaw said. “I needed to go down to a different level. … [Tech] just wasn’t the right fit for me.”

Votaw said she could have stayed at Tech if she had wanted to. She intends to play for Eastern Florida State next season as a redshirt freshman, then transfer back to the NCAA Division I ranks.

Akoro, a center, could not be reached for comment. Brooks said Akoro is also seeking more playing time than she would have gotten at Tech next season.

The news brings to four the number of players who will be transferring from Tech during the summer. As previously reported, Chanette Hicks and Diandra DaRosa will also be leaving the school.

As previously reported, Brooks has added three signees this month — his daughter Chloe and junior-college transfers Trinity Baptiste and Alexandrine Obouh Fegue.

“We knew we had the scholarships available before we signed all of them,” Kenny Brooks said.

Chloe Brooks missed the early part of her senior season at Spotswood High School because of foot surgery. Kenny Brooks said the guard will probably be redshirted as a freshman.

“Chloe is probably one of the smarter players I’ve recruited,” he said. “She’s the kind of kid you want in your locker room.”

Obouh Fegue was a sophomore center this year for the team that Votaw will be joining — Eastern Florida State. Obouh Fegue plans to graduate from the junior college in December and join the Hokies later that month. Brooks said he has not yet decided whether she will play for the Hokies beginning in mid-December or redshirt the 2018-19 season.

“She’s a tremendous talent,” Brooks said. “She’s a traditional post player who can score with her back to the basket, [and] who can go out to 15, 16 feet and knock down a shot.”

Baptiste was a redshirt freshman forward this year at Northwest Florida State (Junior) College.

“You could argue that the [power forward] spot was the least consistent that we had, and we needed to add a little bit of toughness to that position,” Brooks said. “Trinity will bring that physicality that we need. It will also give us a chance to be more versatile, where we can move Michelle [Berry] around a little bit and take away some of the beating and the pounding that was put on Regan [Magarity]. Nobody else [besides Magarity] was considered a rebounder, and that’s one of Trinity’s fortes.”

He has one scholarship left to award this spring.
