So if Tampa is ihe only team doing this reliever thing
...they would have an advantage.
Apparently tonight the Orioles knew that after Romo went through the first 5 righthanded Oriole batters, the Rays would bring in their "real starter", the lefty Yarborough.
Because the Orioles put their basic lineup vs lefties in (the RH catcher instead of the LH catcher, the RH DH, etc).
So I wonder if the Orioles just assumed that Yarborough would be the guy to replace Romo after one inning, based on when he last pitch, or if Tampa's manager let it be known. I mean Yarborough started warming up pretty much as soon as the game started, but the lineups had been already set by then.
Anyway...how did it turn out? The righthanded top of the O's order got a run and a 1-0 lead off Romo. Yarborough came in and pitched GREAT for over 6 innings. But the Orioles won 2-0 as Baltimore pitching was strong.
So Tampa didn't win with the strategy but they did hold the Orioles to 2 runs. If Baltimore hadn't pitched so well, tonight would definitely have been a positive for Tampa's unique strategy.
