I've seen high school football participation almost cut in half...

over the past 20-30 years. I've also noticed that high school bands are much smaller now than they were 30 years ago. Is it because kids aren't as involved in high school activities? Is it that there are too many activities available to select from? Is it because of the internet, video games, cell phones, …? I'm not attacking the kids of today. I'd be interested to know the reason.

Most civic groups and clubs have trouble getting anybody under the age of 60 to participate these days. Just take a look at the Lion's Club, the Kiwanis Club, garden clubs, and even the VFW and American Legion and you'll see mostly members born before 1955. This began back sometime in the 1980's-1990's. Something changed in America that made people less likely to participate in community organizations. It appears to be a generational thing and it looks like each newer generation is less likely to participate civically. High school football may be one of them.

As for football, the reason participation is down in rural Southside Virginia is because there are stricter requirements for academics, the cost of insurance, the cost of football equipment, and the introduction of soccer to many schools. Plus more kids are being homeschooled these days.
