NHL was like soccer 1 ref and 2 linesman, but added a 2nd ref in 2000


I think AHL and lower all still only have 1 ref.

Soccer would probably benefit from the same. Also, in practice, I don't know how often linesmen will alert the ref to infractions other than their obvious job (offsides and out of bounds) though apparently that's in the job description.
