It's called succession planning and the best run organizations practice it constantly. It's also one of the reasons that Fuente named a Co-DC last winter, in order to keep a rising star who could eventually take the DC position. Unfortunately that person derailed his own future, and he's been replaced by a very experienced potential VT DC, IMHO.
