Did you know that the KFC Bucket sign was designed, built and first ...

Displayed in Roanoke?

The signs, as you may recall, consisted of a giant, lighted KFC bucket that was mounted high on a pole and rotated.

Back in the late 50s Roanoke had a local fast food chain called Lendy’s. Franchising worked a bit differently in the fast food industry back then. Lendy’s owned the rights to serve the Shoneys/Big Boy menu back then, but the owner, Leonard Goldstein, discovered the up and coming KFC, so he bought the rights to serve the Secret recipe chicken. Shoneys gave Goldstein an ultimatum...if you continue serving that chicken, you can’t serve Big Boy...Goldstein told Shoneys to take a hike.

In 1961, Goldstein sketched out a KFC sign for one of his stores (Melrose Ave) and took it to Kinsey in Roanoke to build. Kinsey also built Roanoke’s Dr. Pepper, H&C Coffee signs as well as the Mill Mountain Star. Soon after it was installed, Col. Harlan Sanders stopped by, saw the unique sign and loved it. He immediately decided to put one up at each of his KFC franchise units all across the country. Kinsey, however, didn’t have the capacity to fulfill the whole contract, so Sanders ended up having a sign company in Kentucky build the rest.
