What if a person's budget only allows him/her to donate $X to VT

(assume both academics and athletics). How much of $X should go towards athletics and how much should go towards academics? In this regard VT-academics is competing against VT-athletics. Since they are competing against each other, then there is the possibility that 1 or both sides are trying to get the most from the donors by suggesting the donor gives more than last time.

I would hope that when VT students are calling asking people to donate to VT that they aren't trying to "encourage" people to give beyond their means. However, I am not sure I can say that with certainty since I believe the VT students are being paid either an hourly wage or a small percentage (i.e. 1-2%) based on the donations raised by them. Then again, I am basing it on my experience as a "fundraiser" for a non-profit group.
