Yep. Joe Pa's rejection of the Big East
opened up the 8th spot for Tech. Tech was the closest football Independent to the northeastern schools. Louisville, Cincinnati, and ECU were also Independents but Tech fit better academically. Army and Navy wanted no part of a conference at that time. The Big East treated us like crap (we had to play all our other sports in the A-10 and CAA or EWL until we made the national championship game in football vs. FSU), but it was a blessing to get in the BEFC which eventually opened the doors to the ACC.
It would've been interesting if the Metro formed their mega conference (FSU, Miami, South Carolina, ECU, VA Tech, WVU, Syracuse, BC, Rutgers, Pittsburgh, Temple, Louisville, Cincinnati, Memphis, Tulane, and Southern Miss). [Post edited by Old Line Hokie at 09/26/2018 10:24AM]
