I wonder if teams can ever put together an if / then deal for a situation

Like this. It probably would require much more advanced planning in less than one month.

If VT beats UM on 11/17, and we have at most 1 conf loss, then that should get VT to the ACCCG.

If by then, VT already has 2 losses, or it loses to at most a 1-loss UM, then VT would be available to play on 12/1 (and might possibly need a 6th win?). Not to mention the possibility that uva might play well enough to be a contender?

My guess, though, is that the decision would have to be made by 11/3, after our BC game and their DU game- which I still think would be too late. Just in terms of all of the contracts that would need to be executed, ticket sales, hotel rooms, etc.

And I think the result to make this all happen would mean that we had already lost enough games by then to think we would likely be available to play USM on 12/1.
