If the FR is going to be contributor on offense or defense

then I don't have a problem playing a true FR. However, I don't believe Mitchell has caught a pass so far this season. So how does playing on special teams as a true FR really help that player reach his goal of playing in the NFL? If the player is determined to go to the NFL in 3 years and 1 year is spent playing only special teams, then he will still have only 2 years of playing offense or defense to impress the scouts. It is no different than if the player RS his FR season. MV1 only had 2 years at QB to impress the scouts because he RS his FR year.

Given that the NFL active man roster has 53 spots and the game day roster only has 46 spots, you don't see NFL teams draft a player too often draft a player, who isn't a K, P, or LS, with the expectation that he will only play special teams.

If a FR is determined to waste his FR playing on special teams, then it is still the coach's decision. It is even the coach's job to show/convince the player that it isn't in his best interest to waste 1 season playing on special teams. Also, I am not sure if all coaches guarantee a recruit PT as a true FR. Now I do think most qualify it on the condition the player is good enough to make the 2-man depth chart or if the coach thinks a player could be a major contributor on special teams. However, at the end of the day it is up to the coach to convince the player that his draft stock is more depended upon his offensive or defensive position (assuming the player is not a K, P, or LS).
