College Presidents
College Presidents are not dictators charting a course at their whim. The college president is the sole employee of the Board. As that employee they are handed a mission mandate with resources and the freedom to hire others to aid them in the furtherance of that mandate. College Presidents seldom 'make any decisions'; the Board does that and do that based mostly on money and/or prestige which is generated by that proximity to money. Board membership changes and the dynamics of their choices change as circumstances evolve.
Every board that believes they can afford this move if it should come to pass will be vying for one of those 64 slots. To not make the cut will mean a decline of their institution and thus their prestige and power and renown and most of all, money.
