It's not tidal near Broad Branch, but it can be very quick flowing when


there has been a lot of rain. Also, there's a number of bridges and so forth right in that area where it might be a matter of getting trapped, caught, or have weird eddys particularly since it appears there was some ice involved according to the story.

It's weird to read for me as I used to live near there and have ran the trail he was hiking many times.
