Linux is the place to write your own code, but like Windows, you never need


to. I will say that shell scripts > batch files, and it's not even close.

For C: gcc
For C++: g++
(both of those are the GNU version and will almost certainly be pre-installed in your distro)

For Python: python3 (not technically a compiler, but Python is a popular language for novices)
For Java: OpenJDK (though Oracle does have a Linux version, OpenJDK is more standard in Linux as far as I've seen)
For Go: go

No recommendation for textbooks, but I've heard quite a bit about Code Academy (though what I've heard might be astroturf as I haven't really been looking)

Otherwise, I agree with HokieForever with Ubuntu or Mint. I use Ubuntu at home.
