In my mind the first half of the decade was very different from the second


First half was gloomy and apocalyptic - "The Russians" by Sting is a good representation. The Second half was more upbeat, free-wheeling, all about money and image. "Money for Nothing" is not a bad symbol for that but to me INXS or U2 are more aligned with that time.
