Its not just the number of games, its the idea of joining for football

That is the hurdle that fans of other schools don't seem to realize.

The ND administration understands this by the number of donors who have threatened to withhold donations (big and small donors) if ND abandons football independence.

Those threats, along with general alumni and fan revolt, scuttled the idea of joining the Big Ten in 1999.

The administration fears such a huge backlash that the idea of joining a football conference is DOA right now.

Many, many ND fans think that the idea of joining is a huge disaster, something that is akin to a total surrender by ND.

It is that which is the chasm that anyone thinking that ND football will join a conference has to consider and deal with.

The national schedule thing is one impediment, but far from the only one.
