SIR: VT self-reports 10 minor violations (two from football)

This is an excerpt from the article about the football violations:

Virginia Tech’s football team self-reported two violations, but only one involved a member of the team’s coaching staff. They were the first secondary violations self-reported by the football program during coach Justin Fuente’s tenure.

An assistant coach had impermissible in-person, off-campus contact with a prospective student-athlete prior to the permissible date during the winter contact period. The assistant had a brief conversation and took a photo with the junior student-athlete.

“They exchanged pleasantries but did not have dialogue that was recruiting in nature,” the report said. “The coach did not initiate contact and was at the high school to see senior PSAs (prospective student-athletes).”

The other violation involved a tweet from Virginia Tech professor discussing a meeting with a prospective student-athlete and his parents. The professor mentioned the student-athlete’s twitter handle in the tweet. The university said the professor wasn’t aware of the NCAA rules prohibiting such publicity and described it as “an isolated incident.”
