Unlike football, you don't have to win your conference to contend for a Natty. All you need is 3 weeks of good hoops 2 days each week. That can happen w a 4-5 seed that finishes 5th in the best league in the country.
Playing an SEC schedule that just has Kentucky in it doesn't make you lethal in the NCAA tourney. I can't remember the last SEC team that won a title not named Kentucky. Florida I guess? But theyre a shell of what they once were with Donovan.

Bottom line is, I think the odds of winning a National title in Basketball are actually better coming from 3-5 in the ACC than it is finishing 2-3 in the SEC. With the right recruiting (that has fallen off of late), it can happen here. I love Buzz and hope he stays - he's a great fit, but it is hard to compete with "going home", if that's whats important to him and his wife.
