I know acid wash jeans were popular at one point

(not sure if they are still popular now) so I assumed the jeans were washed in some sort of acid solution to get that look in color, but not weaken the fabric too much.

Within the last 3 months I bought brand new loose fit carpenter jeans. 2 pair were that dark blue look and honestly I couldn't tell if the company washed them or not. The other 2 pair were that light blue (faded) look that seems to be most common with jeans. Even though I don't know how companies get that "common jeans look," I could see where washing them in something or with something as being a viable step in the process. At the same time I would wonder what steps the companies take to make sure the new jeans don't shrink too much before they hit the shelf. If the jeans say they are 42 x 30, then the tags better be right. A company could quickly lose a lot of business if they are advertising jeans as being 42 X 30 and the jeans shrunk to 38 X 29 before leaving the factory.

I never thought about using sandpaper, but I think that could be a possibility too. I guess it would depend on how much of the process is done by machines.
