My co-worker has a cheap one.

He goes to abandoned homes or old sites where there was once a building of some sort. He has not found anything of value, but he has found some novelty items (to him at least.) He finds hammer & axe heads, nails, some coins (nothing that is super old), bottle caps, etc. He says the cheap detectors don't distinguish what they go over, and the fancier ones do. No matter what is in the soil, he will dig it up.

In some cases, he asks the landowner if it is OK to scan their land. The landowner usually wants to look over what he finds.
