the only 'name' coach (and I use that term very loosely) linked to the job was Jim Baron of Rhode Island. An older guy with a pretty mediocre track record, who ended up later getting fired from URI. And he withdrew from consideration... imagine that, a coach turning down a Big East job to stay at a tiny school in the A-10. The difference, then, was that VT's program was in total shambles, having just come off the low point of the program during the Stokes 'era'. So we ended up hiring SG in desperation, who himself was barely one step ahead of the posse that was about to get him fired at USF.

It was frustrating then but somewhat understandable, given that our program was so bad, our AD was notoriously penny-pinching, and there were real, legitimate questions about VT's commitment to hoops.

Now, having just come off the most successful season in school history, with an AD regarded as a great boss, and membership in the premier basketball conference in the country, we can't close the deal with coaches from Marquette, UMBC, VCU, or Cincinnati? Are you kidding me?

If Young is the guy, it will be the biggest setback to the program since Bill Foster retired. Ugh. I just can't believe it.
