Maybe the negotiations with the preferred candidate has fallen through


These leaks are all coming from the athletic department in order to pressure a decision by that candidate. On the other hand, this could just be another leak that fails to pan out. Realizing the negotiating tactic, the preferred candidate simply walks away.
