Stain, seal, or other for wood deck?

My townhouse is only a year old and I don't want the deck to start looking weathered. It is only about 5' x 12' and the railing is PVC, so treating the wood floor will be easy. I've heard that some water seals (Thompsons) are not good. Suggestions?
