When I was younger, I wrote four fiction novels ...
Two unfinished, and two finished. I gradually got better as I went along, and the final one I wrote was, I thought, pretty good. I have re-read it a number of times and enjoy it.
I got better by transitioning from a pantser to a plotter. When I nailed it -- my final book -- was when I had the basic plot, and the characters pantsed their way through that plot. It's tricky, but it happened.
Of course, I didn't know the terms. I just knew that I didn't finish my first two books because I didn't do a complete outline of the plot going in. The characters went around pantsing, until things fell apart.
