Aside from 2017 we haven't had that kind of talent on D since 2010

You talk about a team full of all ACC talent, which is what we had in 2017 but the years before then were lean. Not quite as lean as last year, but given we were playing record numbers of freshmen I do think they'll improve.

VT has historically had success because the sum is greater than it's parts, that's what happens when you suck at recruiting like we do and always have.

You talk about 5 star difference makers, here's my list of guys like that who can single-handedly change a game:

- Tim Settle in '17
- Tremaine Edmunds in '16-'17
- Kendall Fuller in '13-'14 (non-factor his Junior year)
- Greg Stroman in '17
- Dadi Nicolas in '14 (not really in '15)
- Kyle Fuller in '12
- Jayron Hosley in '11-'12

That's not many (most were in a single year), and it's almost entirely at corner. This is a team that has had great success with low-ranked guys like Baron, Williams, Maddy, Nicolas, Gayle, etc on the dline. Our linebackers, outside of Edmunds have been mediocre on paper to the point where two of our best have been walk-ons in Tyler and Williams.

It hasn't been game breaking talent that sustained success on D the last decade, it's been great coaching and player development. There's little reason to think those capabilities have gone away, so to think the players on D as a whole will get worse this year is out there. I think Dax and Ashby are our best potential LB pair in recent memory, Deablo and Floyd are up there at safety as well. Farley has all the physical tools and the younger corners seem willing to hit. DT is a huge problem but having bodies is more than we had last year. DE we've recruited well, so we'll see how that pans out.
