It sounds like you're putting it into a position where you're constantly whacking something that's wearing out the string, thus you need to keep feeding it out.
Try cutting from as far away as possible with the diameter of the string arc, and only move closer as the string wears down. When you have to advance the string again, try to remember to start as far away as possible again.
