There’s plenty of land around Blacksburg that has not been developed.
And VT has a lot of open acreage too. The school administration as well as the State are very well aware of the situation and are moving forward to address the issues. If the town needs more open land it can petition the County for a “friendly” annexation of more area. Blacksburg is not a city for which annexation is currently prohibited.
Currently there is an 800+ unit apartment complex that is being proposed by a developer for property off of north Main Street. In Christiansburg, off of Peppers Ferry Road, there is a new 150+ unit apartment complex that almost complete plus additional town homes, condos and other housing adjacent to the same tract.
The only negative I see for all this is the more liberal biased population that will move in to the area. But, that’s the way it is with areas supported by colleges.
