Japan never should have done both.

They had a light carrier sunk and a big carrier damaged at Coral Sea, so obviously they weren't available for Midway. After Pearl Harbor, the Japanese couldn't decide what direction to go. So they did a little bit of everything. What they should have done is concentrated their striking power in one attack. Wanna go after Midway and threaten Hawaii? Great. Wanna go southeast towards the shipping lanes to Australia and cut off that huge land mass? That's fine too. But pick one of them. Not both.
