I didn't think it was possible or in his best interest with regards to
weight management to drop down. With that said I think his style fits 165 more so than 174. With him having been a big 165 in the past he could always power through his opponents hips on his that high crotch. I noticed that at 174 he was having a lot harder time with this and was getting caught under some of the more power and "heavier" hips. With that said if he has a hard time cutting and managing the weight, I do like the potential path up at 174 for DMF, given the projected weight changes and redshirts do happen.
The move down does make more sense for the team and I am really happy for Hughes. He has gutted it out here when most wouldn't. While he isn't the most talented I think he will surprise a lot of people.
