During the Sandusky scandal and shortly after Paterno's death...
there were some major Penn State donors (athletic and academic) who voiced their displeasure with the Big 10 and thought about leaving for the ACC. The height of PSU's disappointment with the Big 10 was the summer of 2012 before Maryland announced (November 2012) that they were heading to the Big 10. That was a strange late summer with Notre Dame joining the ACC as a non-football member. FSU and Maryland weren't happy about the increased conference exit fee. John Delany was busy talking to Maryland during that time. Delany decides to bring in 2 northeastern schools (Maryland and Rutgers) to make Penn State feel that they weren't geographically isolated form the rest of the Big 10. A year earlier (September 2011), the ACC invited Pitt and Syracuse to join the ACC. Then the ACC replaced Maryland with Louisville and that was it for P-5 expansion. Hard to believe it's been that long ago.
I don't think Penn State will leave the Big 10 any time soon. I think all of us here on this board will be dead if or when that day ever comes.
