Naw, not that hard. Just tune up the VOR for LGA or DCA, then hope....

for decent visibility below 3000 feet. You can do that much very easily on Flight Simulator, and with an aviation chart you could navigate even more specifically, even with the inevitable distractions. They must have trained for that much, at least, if such an operation was being contemplated.
