I guess the term of the day is Coastal.
Yes the Big Ten has many in Eastern Time Zone, but it goes all the way out to Indiana. Pretty much all of the ACC is Coastal with the exception of Louisville and Notre Dame. But Notre Dame operates as Coastal.
It's just a different culture than Midwestern, and it shows. The fans of the Big Ten are having a serious problem accepting the likes of Coastal members. They really still haven't accepted Penn State, and anything more Coastal certainly is having a hard time. The constant drumbeat of articles like the one linked continue to tell the story.
There are those that would have preferred the ACC remain a Southern Conference. But once we decided to enter the northeast, we had to change to accepting different cultures. We'd never experienced Catholic Universities before. Now we have 2. But I think the ACC has handled the cultural changes very well.
