Joe said no to the Big East.
Had he said yes to the Big East, he would have seen PSU with Miami go to the ACC in 2003. That is an assumption but I think it is a safe one. Because of the actions of the State Government of Virginia, Virginia Tech would have blown up the deal and been the 3rd team in.
This brings up an interesting problem. The whole move to the ACC by Miami, Virginia Tech (over Syracuse at the time) and BC was orchestrated through BC. BC was collecting confidential documents, passing confidential meeting notes and do all sorts of Mafia-like moves. If they suddenly found themselves outside of the three moving, how much of that serious dirt do they keep to themselves?
But, the point I was making is that Penn State said no to the idea of an Eastern League. Now to be even more of a nerd over this, it wasn't really Penn State's or Joe's fault. Pitt is the one that screwed Penn State up on being in an eastern league. They deny it of course, much as PSU fans deny the debacle at Penn State with Sandusky and Joe knowing all about it.
The time is further filled with conjecture, if Penn State had been admitted into the Big east with WVU and Rutgers in 1993 and then later Temple and Virginia Tech, would it have folded? The whole reason for the raid in 2003 was because as badly set up as the Big East was, it was casting a shadow over the ACC. The ACC had to raid or die, there could be only one eastern league. The ACC struck first.
I do think that had Penn State moved over with VT and Miami, that would bring the ACC to 12 and the next 4 in would not include Notre Dame and in spite of what people here seem to think, I think that is a better thing for the ACC. Syracuse, Pitt, BC and Rutgers would come over.
I do not believe the ACC would have invited WVU to the party. But I think Maryland would still leave for the Big Ten and the best replacement is UCONN. So many ways all of this could have gone and I am not all that keen to drive down this worn out road.
