Athletes generally require much mor me extensice

Healthcare than normal students do. So student healthcare doesn’t cover as much. Students also aren’t employees but if athletes are then they get taxed on the medical benefits received just as employees in other industries are. Work study payments generally don’t pay enough to require students to pay taxes on the income (they get refunds if they pay) unless total income exceeds the minimum levels. The value of a full scholarship and related benefits plus any athlete pay would likely push full scholarship athletes to an income level where they would have to pay taxes. Again who has the cash to pay the taxes? You would have to gross up the payments to account for taxes which runs the cost to athletic departments even higher. Most are around break even now.
