I started following VT in Jimmy Sharpe's final season...

and graduated in 86. So I've seen some less than stellar Hokie football in my time, as well as all of the peak years. Only seasons I can remember that were remotely like this one were Frank's first two seasons, and the debacle of 1992 (Dooley's first two years weren't fantastic either, but you could see that slow progress was on the way). Thing is, Frank's first two years were easier to understand because we were on probation and the entire athletic dept (heck, the entire school administration) was in shambles. I'm not sure Saban or Belichick could have done much in those two seasons. And 92, while it was a horrific year (with the Rutgers loss being the most gut-wrenching) at least showed the seeds hope on one side of the ball... our offense was actually decent that year, we just couldn't stop anyone when it counted. Dave Braine forced Frank to clean house and bring in Elmo, and the rest is history.

All that being said, I honestly can't recall seeing a VT team look more lifeless and disorganized than what I'm seeing this year, as well as in several games last year. The ODU loss last year broke the program and we have never recovered from it, IMHO. I just can't imagine a Dooley or Beamer-coached team looking so passive, and can't imagine either of those coaches allowing the program culture and player effort to deteriorate the way it has. This is definitely the low point of Hokie football that I've seen.
