It will not be driven completely by economics. Fanaticism will play a
role. Boosters make contributions to athletic departments all the time. What is the ROI?
Say a booster wants to contribute a million dollars to an athletic department but decides to use a lot of the money as a payroll for a given University's sports team instead? What is the ROI?
I am not sure there is much difference in the ROIs in these two situations. Sometimes, a lot of it is fans wanting their team to be the best. In fact, some people may consider the ROI in the second situation to be better than the ROI in the first situation (especially given the new tax law regarding athletic donations).
