In that respect it's no different than a private corporation

There are plenty of people in government who work damn hard and feel a sense of mission, and there are plenty of people in the private sector that skate by doing the least needed. The fundamental difference between the two being that a corporation has to be somewhat more financially responsible, while government simply has to have the votes to proceed.

But that goes back to faceless bureaucracies being more capable of taking necessary but unpopular action. Sometimes things are necessary that do not return an easily measurable profit. So we have government.
