The letter narration was interesting but the movie part was average


It just never seemed to fully capture the scale of the conflict or the casualties for me. It was a little too focused on the few individual people/units for me. They mentioned the large numbers of dead and wounded and how the battle was basically a huge waste of people, time and materials. But it was kind of background material for what they presented.

That said, I did have to shake my head at how they described the planning for the operation. It left no room for error or for changing conditions on the battlefield and had a whole lot of assumptions built in. The results are not surprising, especially with the communications capabilities of the time period.
