I was thinking about that, when I saw Danny Manning @ Wake/BC hoops game
Schools that hire high-profile former athletes (whether football or hoops) --- how often does this become a good hire?
Great players aren't always great coaches/front-office (ahem, Michael Jordan).
At the college level, I'm not sure if well-known pro athletes really have the grind/desire to succeed. Once you've made $48M in your pro career, do you really want to drive 5 hours to recruit a 17-year old? Do you really want to sleep in your office for the weekend?
Next up, Penny Hardaway. He might be a good fit though, since he already "paid his dues" by coaching AAU/high school level. Also helps that the Memphis area has some great talent.
