Dartmouth likely got in because of their Ivy league backing.


Utah has been close to AAU membership for awhile and they have worked hard to meet all the requirements. Plus there are a lot of AAU member schools in the Pac 12 and the AAU wanted more members in that region of the country. UC-Santa Cruz is part of the UC-System. Most of the UC schools are now AAU members. I guess they all look out for each other.

I'm surprised that Arizona State didn't get in. It was thought that ASU and Utah were likely choices. Other universities that I saw mentioned over the past few years are UMass-Amherst, Florida State, NC State, Georgia, Nebraska, and Virginia Tech. Probably will have to wait another decade or so for the next round of AAU membership. The ACC is lacking compared to the Big 10 and Pac 12. Tech has some areas to work on. Research appears to be good but top professor salaries are not up to AAU standards. Tech is bringing in more international undergraduate students the past few years. I think that is another thing the AAU looks at. I doubt Tech gets an AAU invite any time soon. I have a feeling Arizona State, UMass, and NC State get the next invites. I hope someone who is in the know at Tech can give more/better information than me.
