Given that schools are offering scholarships to I think elementary
age recruits, maybe the "intent" of the rule has passively changed. I get the skepticism and I even raised an eyebrow when I first read the news story. However, given how the NCAA bylaws are written, I believe the burden of proof rests with the NCAA to show that a school or individual is guilty of violating a bylaw. Not that a school or individual is innocent of violating a bylaw. Now whether the NCAA practices what it preaches may be up for debate. If Memphis was a member of a P5 conference or a "blue blood program," then it wouldn't surprise me if this would have been a non-issue. I am curious to see if the schools use this incident as an opportunity to clarify or streamline the rules to try to keep history from repeating itself.
