What if there are no undefeated teams or only 1-2 undefeated team(s)? An argument could be made that you are splitting hairs between #3, #4, #5, and #6 ranked teams some (most?) years. So the Playoffs Inc. and ESPN would have a hard time switching between 4 and 8 teams year to year when you factor in the scheduling logistics. If the NCAA Basketball Tournament and the bowl games are any indication, the neutral site venues have to be scheduled (aka reserved) at least a year in advance.
