FWIW I believe a few years ago Michigan decided to honor

the retired numbers by allowing current players to wear them for the remainder of their career. I believe Michigan's QB wore Tom Harmon's #98 jersey.

I think I would be okay if VT did something similar and allowed a current player to wear a retired number for a game or the entire season. If it was for a game, then VT could honor 1 number per home game. VT could use the week to talk about the player. Then at halftime, VT could do a segment to talk about why the player's number was retired and use that opportunity to honor the player and his family again. Basically VT would use this opportunity educate (or re-educate) members of the Hokie Family on who these players were and why their numbers were retired. As we get further away from their playing days at VT, fewer Hokies will know who they were because they never had an opportunity to see them play in person or on TV. If VT wants to remain connected to the past, then I think it is important from time to time to retell their stories particularly since fans will see their names and numbers flying at Lane Stadium. Heck the same thing could be done for the players who had their jersey retired or Coach Foster.
